As a Veteran of the Post 9/11 war, I am working on a memorial to the members of the service who have lost their lives fighting the War on Terror. It is easy in today's commerical world to forget that there are members of the military who make the ultimate sacrifice and serve our country to honor our rights as Americans. I would like to honor those who have fallen, and praise those who have served in my senior show piece.
To do so, I would like to use newspapers. I find that newspapers symbolize current issues and are a great tool for keeping history... perfect for symbolizing members who have and are fighting in the war today. I enjoy working with found objects and making imagery with them. Newspapers also have a recycled quality that can symbolize the reproduction/replacement qualities of members in the military. As a veteran, I know that being torn down, only to be rebuilt again as a stardarized military member is one of the main goals in military training. Therefore, I will be representing each military member with one rolled up newspaper.
There are currently 5,708 military members who have lost their lives in the war since it kicked off in 2001, I will be representing each fallen service member with one newspaper. I have calculated that my peice will be approximately 11ft wide and 8 ft tall. This is bigger than the 6x6 space we are allowed, and Hollis has approved my larger piece.
