Artist Statement- unproofed

Artist Statement    Jennifer Hassin
I enjoy working with my hands and creating forms that translate an idea or emotion that I am passionate about. When I brainstorm, I find myself sketching ideas into my sketchbook that often times do not turn into anything, but act as a stepping stone for another idea.
I enjoy expressing my personal feelings through art to relay a message. Whether the message is about my struggles through childhood, my military experience, or life as a mother, to form sculptures and create collages acts as a vehicle to releasing my feelings towards that certain subject. My experiences in life differ from the next persons; therefore exposing my passions is a way for me to tell my story.
I have been told that my art has a calm, maternal feeling that radiates from my pieces. I find it interesting because although I am a mother, my personal life is nowhere near calm. The truth is that I have lived a hard life and have experienced unpleasing things. I feel that I make art to cover up and keep away from negativity; I find peace in it. I pick myself up by my bootstraps and do what I love.
